You probably think that all advanced and defensive driving courses are conducted on wet road surfaces. In reality, most operators run their exercises on dry road surfaces to save money, and allow them to use less skilled instructors. They often use the excuse that “modern cars have ABS, so wetting the road isn’t necessary.” This is a complete misconception that clearly shows a lack of understanding about ABS and advanced vehicle dynamics.
At Driver Dynamics, we refuse to cut corners. Every single defensive and advanced driving course we run is conducted on a wet road surface.
Why does Driver Dynamics insist on wet road training?
Emergency control in the wet is the hardest skill to master and teach. Because of this, it also requires much more skilled, highly qualified, and knowledgeable instructors to deliver the training safely and effectively. We could take the easy road, hire less experienced staff, and run our courses in the dry like our competitors, but that just wouldn’t be the Driver Dynamics Way.
Our slippery, low-traction training is so effective that we actually train lots of ABS engineers and vehicle dynamics experts in Australia, including the local test and development drivers of these advanced braking systems. Along with global safety engineers, they explicitly choose to train with us.
My car has ABS. How does wet surface training benefit me?
To properly train a driver to use ABS instinctively and safely exploit the system at manageable, realistic speeds, a wet surface is absolutely required. You will learn exactly how your vehicle behaves when traction drops, ensuring your reactions become second nature.
Does this training benefit drivers of older cars without ABS?
Absolutely. We actively teach vital emergency control techniques for non-ABS vehicles. An added benefit of training on our wet surfaces is that it drastically lowers traction limits, allowing you to practice threshold braking without the risk of “flat spotting” your tyres.
Over the past 25 years, Driver Dynamics has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into proprietary water infrastructure. Our setup includes our own 175,000-litre water storage tanks and a dedicated modern water truck, allowing us to utilize our own 100% recycled water for our training.
